In my position I have the good fortune of meeting lots of interesting, ambitious people. However misguided it may be (🤪), they often seek my advice on things like career planning, compensation, and how to choose meaningful problems to work on. Lately, it feels like these conversations have been happening more frequently as the capital market turns over and overall venture funding declines.
In almost all cases, I give the same advice in pursuing new opportunities…seek agency. In the context of work, agency has three parts:
Company Vision/Mission: is the purpose of this company something you align with personally? Are you excited to tell friends and family about what you’re working on?
Direct Impact: Can you measure how your professional work contributes directly to advancing that vision/mission?
Economic Upside: Are you participating meaningfully in the economic upside of that vision being realized, given the opportunity cost of helping it get there?
If I can ever help you think through these things, reach out! And if you’re looking for your next gig, here’s a shameless plug for our Also Talent platform, which helps you find that next great opportunity :)
